Epic Camp Day 3 (Gary)

Sleep last night was better again. I crashed at 10:30 after a family sized lasagne for dinner but woke up at 11:15. I nearly wept on my pillow – the room was too hot and all bed clothes were discarded and I got back to sleep about 12. When I awoke I read through everyone’s blogs – I just didn’t …

Epic Day Three (Adam)

Another bog standard day in paradise.  Just a 6k swim and 10k run before breakfast.  Hardly seemed worth getting up for but these recovery days are important.  Camp completion minimum today was 3k swim, 10k run and then just 105k to Clinton where we stop for a couple of nights.  Johnbo announced at the briefing before the ride ‘you might …

Epic Camp 2014 – Day 3 – Lillooet to Clinton (David)

Thursday’s plan was for a 3k lake swim, a 10k run and a 106k (66 mile) bike ride – and a rather hilly one at that. The run needed to be done at some point, either after the swim or after the bike ride. I was rooming with Adam K. and he suggested getting on the early ‘bus’ to the …

Epic Camp Day 2 (Gary)

Camp today was an 8k cycle to the lake where IM Whistler is held for an aquathon, then a 160k ride with the steepest climb of the camp lasting around 13km, finishing with a stunning descent, another steep bump and some more descending. The ride to the lake was pretty pedestrian with today’s big climbs playing on people’s mind. I …

Epic Day Two (Adam)

A suitably Epic Day.  Definitely not falsley advertised.  When you’re contemplating all the stuff you’ve done and thinking ‘Wow we’ve done so much.  Hang on we’re only halfway through the ride on Day Two’, you realise you’re not being sold short. Aquathlon.  An Epic Camp staple and something that was pretty neat to actually take part in.  Cycled down to …

Epic Camp 2014 – Day 2 – Whistler to Lillooet (David)

Tuesday night I was shattered. I was in bed by 8:15pm and asleep by 9. I woke up just before 5am so lazed around for about an hour before getting up at 6. Sorted myself out and then down with my bike shortly after 6:30am for the early activities. A pre-breakfast of toast and honey followed by a honey sandwich …

Epic Day One (Adam)

So after a nice ‘getting to know you’ meal in the hotel and a briefing from Johnbo (“Try and remember things can go wrong so keep a nice chilled-out vibe on the camp”…followed by “Tomorrow’s run 615 outside. If you’re not there I’m pissing off at 615”) and some wise words from the Terminator, it seemed a good idea after …

Epic Camp 2014 – Day 1 – Vancouver to Whistler (David)

Every day for the next 12 days my laptop will pop up a little reminder about the day ahead. Unfortunately, the one thing I cannot do is click ‘Snooze!’ I was awake shortly before 5am (the 8 hour time difference didn’t help at all) and at about 10 past I got up and worked out how to use the coffee …

Epic Camp Day 1 – (Gary)

Day 1 of camp was preceded by a restless night reminiscent of the night before a race. The constant checking of the time that seemed to coincide with the passing of each hour, then having that inner struggle knowing that checking the phone wasn’t helping to get to sleep. So at 5am I got up, showered and packed and ready …

Epic Camp 2014 – Day 0 (David)

After spending the last few days trying to decide whether to take my fancy time trial bike or road bike I eventually decided on the road bike. This should be more comfortable for me over the next couple of weeks, so ‘Ruby’, my trusty Specialized Roubaix which I’ve had since early 2008 will be my friend for the next two weeks. …
