I’m going to write a proper race report when I get home, so this will be short.
When I was writing my previous post I initially included a bit about how I had come down with a cold. Then I deleted it, because no-one likes excuses before the cannon has even fired. Trouble is, you then end up with excuses after the fact. Either way, on Wednesday I woke up with a sore throat. By Thursday I was also sneezing quite a lot and James raided the pharmacy for aspirin, Vit C, decongestant and throat lozenges. I did my best to gargle with salt water but I think it’s a life skill that requires years to perfect and which I am abysmal at.
Race day adrenaline, positive thinking and the taper meant I thought I was fine, but achieving race intensity heart rate was far harder than it should have been and especially on the run, my lungs hurt which was a bit of a limiter.
Overall, I am very pleased with the way I was able to mitigate the time haemorrhage from the early walking on Ali’i. I’m a little disappointed that I wasn’t able to show what great shape I was in, but I’m proud I got through and I did enjoy most of the day. I don’t at all consider it a bust – I was top 3rd of my age group and I have some great memories of the day. It was tough, but it’s the tough ones that show you what you’re made of. It’s a kick ass big medal and I earned it.
